Summary of question
I am not really willing to convert to Christianity but can I pretend to be Christian simply for getting a passport?
question
I am not really willing to convert to Christianity but is it permissible in Islam to apparently convert to Christianity and pretend to be a Christian only to get a passport?
Concise answer
The answer given by His Eminence, Ayatollah Mahdi Hadavi Tehrani is as under:
Expressing infidelity and disbelief is by itself considered to be disbelief (in Islam) and if it is necessary that one should pretend to be non-Muslim, there would be no problem in it except for when it may entail an "evil". For example, if it causes others' beliefs to be weakened or if it is an insult to Islam, it is not allowed.
