Is it permissible to dance for fitness?
question
If a person's intention is to gain fitness through dancing, in a group or alone, and there is no frivolity or libidinous pleasure involved, is it haram? I mean sports like aerobics etc.?
Concise answer

We forwarded your question to the offices of the grand jurists and the answers which we have received are as under:

Grand Ayatollah Khamenei (may Allah grant him long life):

If dancing entails sexual excitation or committing a ḥarām act like listening to ḥarām music, or it is in the presence of non-mahram men, it is forbidden.

Grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi (may Allah grant him long life):

If dancing is not lahwi (frivolous) and it is not taking place in the presence of non-mahram either, there would be no problem in it.

Grand Ayatollah Saafi Gulpaigani (may Allah grant him long life):

Sports which include dancing are forbidden and also listening to music is absolutely forbidden. God knows best!

Please note that that we will send you answers by other jurists as soon as we receive them. May God grant you success.
